Tesla High-Voltage Battery Diagnosis, Repair & Replacement

Independent Battery Solutions for Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X & Model Y

Contents

A high-voltage battery fault can be one of the biggest concerns for any Tesla owner – particularly once the vehicle is outside its manufacturer warranty.

However, a battery warning doesn't automatically mean you need to buy a brand-new battery from Tesla, and it doesn't necessarily mean your existing battery should be completely dismantled and rebuilt either.

At KMC Electric, our approach is to diagnose the problem first and then find the solution that makes the most financial and technical sense for the vehicle.

In many cases, particularly on older or higher-mileage Teslas, sourcing a good-quality used high-voltage battery pack can offer significantly better value than carrying out extensive internal repairs to the original battery.

Our job is to help you understand the options.

Does a Tesla Battery Fault Mean You Need a New Battery?

No.

Tesla's Battery Management System (BMS) continuously monitors the high-voltage battery and can generate alerts for many different reasons.

These can include:

Some problems may be repairable without replacing the complete battery.

Others can make replacing the complete pack the more sensible option.

That's why proper diagnosis should always come first.

Tesla Battery Diagnosis

Before recommending a battery repair or replacement, we want to understand what is actually happening inside the vehicle.

Depending on the fault, our investigation can include:

Full Tesla Diagnostic Scan

We check current and historic vehicle alerts, paying particular attention to the Battery Management System and other high-voltage components.

Battery State of Health

Where appropriate, we can assess the overall condition of the high-voltage battery and look at how its current capacity compares with its expected condition.

Cell and Brick Voltage Analysis

The overall pack voltage only tells part of the story.

Our diagnostic equipment allows us to examine the battery in much greater detail, including individual cell-group/brick voltage information where supported.

This can help identify:

High-Voltage Isolation Testing

Isolation faults can prevent a Tesla from driving or charging.

These don't automatically mean the entire battery has failed.

We can investigate whether an isolation problem is coming from the battery itself or another high-voltage component connected to the system.

Used Tesla Battery Replacement

When a high-voltage battery has suffered significant internal deterioration or damage, repairing the original pack isn't always the best financial decision.

A Tesla battery contains a huge number of cells and many interconnected components.

While individual faults can sometimes be repaired, extensive dismantling and internal battery work can quickly become labour-intensive.

There is also an important question:

How much money is sensible to invest in repairing an ageing battery when a complete good-quality used battery may be available?

For many vehicles, particularly older Model S and Model X cars, a carefully sourced used battery can provide a much better balance between:

For this reason, replacement with a suitable used battery is often one of the first options we investigate when a complete pack is genuinely required.

How Do We Source a Replacement Tesla Battery?

Compatibility is extremely important.

Tesla battery packs have changed considerably over the years, and a battery that physically looks similar isn't necessarily suitable for another vehicle.

Before sourcing a replacement we consider factors such as:

Where possible, we look for a suitable battery with known provenance and assess the available information before recommending it to the customer.

We don't simply fit the cheapest battery we can find.

Can You Fit a Larger Tesla Battery?

On some older Tesla vehicles, alternative battery capacities or later battery revisions may potentially be available.

However, battery upgrades aren't as simple as physically installing a different pack.

Compatibility, vehicle configuration and software all need to be considered.

If you're interested in a battery upgrade rather than a like-for-like replacement, we can investigate the available options for your particular vehicle.

When Is Tesla Battery Repair Worthwhile?

We haven't stopped repairing batteries.

There are situations where repairing the existing battery makes good sense.

For example, the problem may be confined to:

In these situations, repairing the existing pack may be considerably more economical than replacing it.

However, we don't believe every battery fault should automatically lead to a complete battery rebuild.

When Might Replacement Be Better?

Replacement becomes particularly worth considering when:

The value and age of the vehicle also matter.

Spending a very large amount rebuilding an ageing battery isn't always the best decision for the customer.

We'll discuss this openly before recommending a course of action.

Repair, Replace or Monitor?

Sometimes the correct answer is actually:

Do nothing yet.

If testing shows that the battery is still functioning correctly and the issue doesn't currently justify major intervention, we may recommend monitoring it.

Our preferred order is:

1. Diagnose the battery

2. Establish the actual fault

3. Assess the overall condition of the pack

4. Compare repair and replacement costs

5. Recommend the most sensible solution

That might mean repairing the original battery.

It might mean sourcing a good used replacement.

Or it might mean continuing to use the vehicle and monitoring its condition.

Tesla Battery Replacement Isn't Just a Parts-Swapping Job

The Tesla high-voltage battery operates at potentially lethal voltages and is an integral part of the vehicle's electrical and structural systems.

Battery removal and replacement requires appropriate:

Depending on the vehicle and replacement battery, additional configuration, commissioning or software work may also be necessary.

This is specialist EV work and should be treated accordingly.

Tesla Battery Problems We Can Investigate

If your Tesla is displaying alerts relating to:

we can investigate the problem before you commit to an expensive repair.

Tesla Battery Specialists at KMC Electric

At KMC Electric, we specialise in Tesla and electric vehicle diagnostics and repair.

We're equipped to investigate high-voltage battery problems across:

Tesla Model S

Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model Y

Most importantly, we're independent.

Our objective isn't to sell you the biggest battery repair possible. We want to find a solution that makes sense for the vehicle, its age, its condition and your budget.

Where a repair is sensible, we'll discuss repairing it.

Where a good used replacement battery represents better value, we'll investigate that option instead.

And where the battery doesn't need replacing at all, we'll tell you.

Book a Tesla High-Voltage Battery Inspection

If your Tesla has developed a battery warning, charging problem, isolation fault or you've been told that the high-voltage battery needs replacing, contact us before making a decision.

We can diagnose the vehicle and help you understand the options available.
