Why Test a Used EV Battery? {#why-test}
A second-hand EV battery can represent excellent value, particularly when a new replacement battery would make an otherwise good vehicle uneconomical to repair.
However, buying a used high-voltage battery comes with risk.
A battery may have come from a crashed or dismantled vehicle and its history may be limited. Simply knowing that the donor vehicle was running before it was dismantled doesn't necessarily tell you the condition of the battery today.
Once you've bought the battery, there can then be considerable time and expense involved in transporting it, removing the existing battery from the vehicle and installing the replacement.
Discovering afterwards that the replacement battery has a significant imbalance, weak cell groups or another problem can turn an economical repair into a very expensive mistake.

We can attend the location where the used high-voltage battery is being stored, including vehicle dismantlers and breakers' yards, and carry out an assessment of the battery before purchase.
Depending on the battery type and what diagnostic information can be accessed with the pack removed from the vehicle, our testing can include:
- High-voltage battery State of Health assessment
- Individual cell or cell-group voltage analysis where accessible
- Cell imbalance assessment
- Overall pack voltage
- Battery management system information where accessible
- Identification of unusually weak cells or modules

Where a battery or its components have the potential for further use, recovery may be preferable to simply treating the complete assembly as waste. Where the battery has reached the end of its usable life, it should be handled through an appropriate recycling route.
This fits closely with the way we approach EV repair generally: repair and reuse components where practical, and recycle responsibly when they have reached the end of their useful life.
