Tesla motors and drive units are expensive, complex components, but unusual noises or fault codes do not automatically mean the motor needs rebuilding or replacing.
In many cases, careful diagnosis can establish whether the problem is coming from the drive unit itself, the gearbox, bearings, encoder, cooling system, mounts or another related component.
Our aim is to give you a clear understanding of the condition of your Tesla before recommending major work.
When Should a Tesla Drive Unit Be Inspected?
A drive unit inspection may be worthwhile if your Tesla has developed:
- Whining or humming noises
- Rumbling or bearing-type noises
- Vibration under acceleration
- Clicking, knocking or drivetrain movement
- Front or rear motor disabled warnings
- Drive unit or inverter fault codes
- Reduced power
- Intermittent loss of one motor on Dual Motor vehicles
- Coolant-related concerns
- Unusual gearbox oil contamination
- Concerns following a high-mileage purchase
Not every symptom means internal drive unit failure.
For example, noises and vibration can also be caused by suspension components, motor mounts, wheel bearings or tyres.
That is why we start with diagnosis rather than assuming the worst.
What Our Drive Unit Inspection Covers
The exact checks depend on the vehicle and symptoms, but our inspection can include:
Diagnostic Fault-Code Review
We scan the vehicle and review current and stored alerts relating to:
- Drive inverter
- Motor operation
- Encoder / motor position
- Cooling system
- High-voltage system
- Vehicle dynamics
Historic fault information can often provide useful clues, particularly when the fault is intermittent.
Road Test and Noise Assessment
Where safe and appropriate, we road test the vehicle to reproduce the customer's complaint.
We assess:
- Noise under acceleration
- Noise on overrun
- Vibration
- Bearing-type noises
- Changes with road speed or motor load
This can help distinguish a drive unit issue from wheel bearing, tyre or suspension noise.
Drive Unit and Mount Inspection
We inspect accessible components including:
- Motor and drive-unit mountings
- Driveshafts
- Connections
- Coolant hoses
- Signs of leaks
- Physical movement or damage
Cooling System Checks
A drive unit relies on correct thermal management.
Where relevant we can check:
- Coolant condition and level
- Coolant circulation
- Pumps and valves
- Temperature behaviour
- Evidence of coolant leakage or ingress
Gearbox / Reduction Gear Oil
On applicable vehicles we can inspect or replace the drive unit oil.
The condition of the oil can provide useful information about what is happening internally.
We look for:
- Excessive metallic particles
- Abnormal contamination
- Signs of internal wear
Electrical and Sensor Diagnosis
Where faults indicate a possible encoder, inverter or motor-position issue, we can investigate the electrical side before considering mechanical dismantling.
Common Tesla Drive Unit Symptoms
Whining Noise
A slight electric motor whine can be normal, but a noise that becomes noticeably louder with speed or load may justify further investigation.
Possible causes include:
- Gear wear
- Bearings
- Reduction gearbox issues
- Drive unit wear
Rumbling or Bearing Noise
A deeper rumble can come from the drive unit, but wheel bearings and tyres can produce very similar symptoms.
We prefer to prove where the noise is coming from before removing expensive components.
Vibration
Drivetrain vibration doesn't necessarily mean the motor has failed.
Possible causes include:
- Drive unit mounts
- Driveshafts
- Suspension
- Wheels and tyres
- Internal drive unit wear
Motor Disabled Alerts
On Dual Motor Teslas, the vehicle may sometimes disable one motor while still allowing the vehicle to drive.
Depending on the fault, this may relate to:
- Encoder / motor-position sensing
- Inverter faults
- Electrical connections
- Thermal issues
- Internal drive unit faults
Intermittent warnings can often be especially useful diagnostically because stored fault information may identify what caused the shutdown.
Does a Noisy Tesla Motor Need Rebuilding?
Not necessarily.
This is an important part of our approach.
We don't recommend taking a drive unit apart simply because it has covered high mileage or developed a minor noise.
If the unit is operating correctly and there is no evidence of significant internal damage, unnecessary dismantling can create additional cost without providing a meaningful benefit.
Instead, we assess:
- Severity of the noise
- Whether it is getting worse
- Fault-code history
- Oil condition
- Temperature behaviour
- Vehicle mileage
- How the vehicle is being used
We can then advise whether the best course of action is:
Monitor it
Carry out preventative maintenance
Repair an external component
or
Investigate the drive unit internally
What Happens If We Find a Problem?
If our inspection indicates a genuine internal drive unit issue, we'll discuss the options with you before proceeding.
Depending on the fault, these may include:
- Further testing
- Encoder / sensor repair
- Oil service
- Coolant-related repair
- Drive unit removal
- Internal inspection
- Specialist component repair
- Replacement or reconditioned drive unit
We will explain what we have found, the likely risks of continuing to drive and the available repair options.
There is no pressure to dismantle the motor unless the evidence supports doing so.
Tesla Large Drive Unit Inspections
Older Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles fitted with the Large Drive Unit (LDU) have some known areas that are worth monitoring as mileage increases.
These can include:
- Bearing noise
- Coolant-seal deterioration
- Coolant ingress
- Encoder-related issues
- Reduction gearbox wear
Where appropriate, we can inspect the drive unit and advise whether preventative work such as an LDU coolant delete is worthwhile.
Again, our approach is based on the actual condition of the unit rather than automatically recommending a rebuild.
