Your Tesla may use its brakes less than a conventional petrol or diesel car, but that doesn't mean the braking system doesn't need maintenance.
In fact, regenerative braking can create a different problem. Because the electric motors provide much of the vehicle's everyday deceleration, the conventional brake discs, pads and calipers can spend long periods doing relatively little work.
Over time, this can contribute to corrosion, sticking brake pads, seized components and uneven brake wear – particularly on cars driven through wet and salty UK winters.

One of the major advantages of an electric vehicle is regenerative braking.
When you lift off the accelerator, the electric motor can slow the vehicle while recovering energy and returning some of it to the high-voltage battery.
This means the conventional hydraulic brakes may be used considerably less than they would be on an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle.
That's great for brake pad wear – but low brake usage doesn't eliminate maintenance.

If the friction brakes aren't being worked regularly, corrosion can build up on the brake discs and around the areas where the brake pads move within the calipers.
Pads can eventually become tight or seized, preventing them from moving freely.
A Tesla can therefore have plenty of friction material remaining on its brake pads but still require brake maintenance or repair.
Surface corrosion on brake discs is normal after a vehicle has been parked, particularly in damp weather.
Normally, regular braking cleans this away.
On an EV, however, regenerative braking means the friction brakes may not always be used heavily enough to keep the disc surfaces completely clean.
Over time, corrosion can become more substantial and may lead to:
This can be particularly noticeable on the rear brakes.
Brake pads need to move freely within the caliper.
Corrosion and contamination can build up around the pad contact points, eventually causing the pads to become tight.
A sticking brake pad may remain partially in contact with the disc even when you're not braking.
That can cause:
This is one reason we don't judge Tesla brake condition simply by looking at how much material remains on the pads.
Brake calipers also need to operate correctly despite potentially spending long periods doing relatively little work.
Depending on the Tesla model and brake design, problems can include corrosion, sticking sliders or pads, damaged seals and caliper mechanisms that no longer operate as freely as they should.
A proper brake inspection should therefore involve more than looking through the wheel and measuring the pads.
This is particularly important on an electric vehicle.
A brake that doesn't completely release creates additional rolling resistance.
The electric motors then have to use more energy simply to keep the vehicle moving.
Sometimes owners investigate the high-voltage battery because they've noticed a reduction in range when the actual problem is mechanical.
Binding brakes are therefore one of the things we consider when investigating unexpectedly poor EV efficiency or range.
There are a few things Tesla owners can do themselves to help keep the braking system healthy.
Don't deliberately brake aggressively, but when conditions are safe, occasionally allowing the conventional brakes to do some work can help clean light corrosion from the discs.
This is particularly useful after washing the vehicle or after it has been parked in wet conditions.
A small amount of surface rust after parking is perfectly normal.
If the braking surfaces remain heavily corroded after driving and using the brakes, however, it's worth having them inspected.
If your Tesla suddenly seems to be using more energy than normal, don't immediately assume the battery has deteriorated.
Tyres, wheel alignment and binding brakes can all affect efficiency.
A noticeably hot wheel after normal driving can indicate a brake that's binding.
If one wheel is considerably hotter than the others, we'd recommend having it investigated.
Having plenty of pad material remaining doesn't necessarily mean the braking system is healthy.
The pads still need to move freely and make even contact with the discs.
For vehicles showing signs of corrosion or restricted brake movement, a proper brake service can be worthwhile.
Depending on condition, this can involve:

If the discs, pads and calipers are serviceable, maintaining them properly can help extend their useful life.
Regenerative braking doesn't remove the vehicle's conventional hydraulic braking system.
Tesla uses brake fluid just like other vehicles, and its condition should still be monitored.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time. Excessive moisture can reduce its boiling point and contribute to internal corrosion within the braking system.
Brake fluid condition should therefore be tested rather than simply forgotten because the vehicle is electric.

Tesla brakes are inspected as part of the vehicle's MOT just like those on any other vehicle.
However, passing an MOT doesn't mean that preventative brake maintenance isn't worthwhile.
An MOT is primarily a roadworthiness inspection at a particular point in time. It isn't the same as dismantling and servicing the braking system.
A Tesla that passes its MOT may still have corrosion beginning to develop around brake components that would benefit from preventative attention.
